Public (IPO 2017: MDB)

We founded MongoDB in 2007. The company was created with two overall pain points in mind experienced during the creation of DoubleClick: databases were too expensive and too inflexible. At the time, DoubleClick was serving 400,000 ads per second but frequently struggled with scalability and agility. Incumbents like Oracle simply couldn’t keep up and moreover became too expensive to support our growing data needs, particularly with the rise of cloud computing. We knew there had to be a way to create a database that provided developers with a better way to work with data. By assembling a technical founding team consisting of Dwight Merriman (co-founder and CTO of DoubleClick) and Eliot Horowitz (a former software engineer from DoubleClick who had started as a college intern), we embarked on our mission to create MongoDB. By adopting a business model centered on open-source and the document data model, we were able to create a modern general-purpose data platform that was affordable and flexible. Today, MongoDB has been downloaded over 80 million times and serves over 15,000 customers worldwide. The company IPOd in 2017 (MDB) and employs more than 1,500 people worldwide.
